Rebel Wilson: Isn’t She Romantic

Rebel Wilson isn’t in the mood for love in the new movie, “Isn’t It Romantic?” The “Pitch Perfect” star plays Natalie, an architect in New York who scoffs at romantic movie cliches. The preview shows Natalie as a child happily watching “Pretty Woman.”

Her mother tells her “love’s not a fairy tale. Girls like us don’t get that…We’re not Julia Roberts.” Natalie goes on believing that until, after a mugging attempt knocks her out, she wakes up in a rom-com movie world, and a PG-13 one at that. She has a spacious, gorgeous apartment and a flamboyantly gay best friend. Her love life is torn between the mysterious and rugged stranger played by Liam Hensworth and a kooky co-worker played by Adam DeVine. The only way she can escape this world and return to reality is to overcome the cliches and find true love on her own.  Read more:Isn’t Romantic Trailer | Glamour

Opening on February 13 just in time for Valentine’s Day, “Isn’t It Romantic?” offers Rebel Wilson a potential breakout starring role after she played second fiddle in other comedies. The 38-year-old Aussie actor came to fame as part of an ensemble cast in the “Pitch Perfect” trilogy of movies about a university’s female a cappella group. Wilson has also acted in other ensemble comedies such as “How to Be Single” and “What to Expect When You’re Expecting.”

Wilson got her start at the Australian Theater for Young People playing dramatic roles but found herself inadvertently getting laughs. She told the New York Times that while playing a serious part the audience cracked up. “I thought, fat is funny, in a weird way,” she told the Times. “People find it easier to laugh at big girls.”

After starring in a few Aussie films, Wilson moved to Hollywood at age 30, a somewhat late age for an industry that forces women into retirement much sooner than their male counterparts. She got a break on her second day in the U.S. when talent agency William Morris Endeavor signed her. Wilson said the agency told her they didn’t have any other actors that looked like her.

Wilson has clearly parlayed her unique, plus-size look into a successful acting career. While many rom-coms feature thin blondes, Rebel Wilson has a chance to break that casting rut. A proud, full-figured woman deserves love as much as anyone else. And “Isn’t It Romantic?” will give audiences a chance to fall in love with Rebel Wilson all over again.
